I’m a little ashamed to admit to you that I just lost a whole hour of my day to Instagram. It started with simply posting a quick story for this site. But then I hit the search button.
Scrolling through the newest must have makeup items, home decor, workout gear, clothing, jewelry, and whatever else popped up on my feed, I got lost in time.
As I kept scrolling I started thinking…
I need that.
Oh! I want that.
Dang, why does EVERYONE’s kitchen look prettier than mine?? I need an upgrade.
Ohhhhh! I definitely want that! But it’s definitely out of the budget!
I wish my hair looked that good.
I need to workout more!
I wish I had that job.
I want to go on vacation too!
And my spirit started to sink, because through the screen of my phone, everyone’s life seems a bit more glamorous than mine. Discontentment and restless cravings fill my mind and soul.
I wish I had more… just more of everything.
Am I the only one??
Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 6:9
Ecclesiastes 6:9 says we must enjoy what we have. Not waste our time dreaming about what we don’t have, because it’s meaningless and pointless.
To continuously want more causes misery and unrest in our spirits. It’s not healthy or Biblical to have restless cravings or discontentment constantly in our hearts. Nor is it sensible to excessively always want more, when God is meeting our needs.
Instead of wasting a whole hour of my day desiring what I don’t have, I should have been setting my eyes on the many blessings God has already given me.
It’s so important that we find joy in what is right in front of us. Not what is distant, uncertain, and out of reach. God wants us to make the very best out of what we have, and live in the moments of our own lives, being content in every circumstance.
It’s good to have goals, ambitions, and dreams. It’s awesome to be inspired by others. But if we notice that our soul is becoming more and more restless and unsatisfied by vain and empty desires we shouldn’t ignore it.
We shouldn’t waste our time wanting the next best thing, or feeling like our lives don’t measure up. Comparison is a tactic of the enemy. Keeping our eyes set on things in front of us is best!
Enjoy and be grateful for what you have, because that is how true joy & happiness are created within your life!
